FIX: SQL Server Error Message 6002 Is Returned with an Incorrect Severity (301642)

SYMPTOMS
While SQL Server is in the process of shutting down, if a user without sysadmin privileges with an already existing connection executes a query, the following error message is returned to the client application:
SHUTDOWN is in progress. Log off.
This is SQL Server message 6002, but it is returned with a severity of 10, which is incorrect.
RESOLUTIONTo resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Microsoft SQL Server 2000. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the

HotfixNOTE: The following hotfix was created prior to Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 2.

Modify the error handling code in the client application to check for message 6002 and treat it as a severity 16 error.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 2.MORE INFORMATION
Because the error message is returned with an incorrect severity, client applications written to handle errors based on the severity will not handle this message correctly and may continue to attempt activity against the SQL Server server.
