IntelliMouse: You Cannot Select the IntelliMouse Optical Mouse (301614)

When you have the Microsoft IntelliMouse Optical mouse installed on your system, you may be unable to select your mouse: When you open the Mouse option in Control Panel, the Device list is blank.
CAUSE
This behavior can occur if the Msmouse.vxd file is not updated correctly.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, follow these steps:
- Click Start click Run, type msconfig, and then press ENTER.
- Click Extract Files.
- In the "Specify the system file you would like to restore" field, type msmouse.vxd, and then press ENTER.
- Insert the Microsoft IntelliPoint 3.2 compact disc into your computer's CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive, and then click Browse next to the Restore From box.
- In the Browse for Folder dialog box, expand the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive, and then browse to the following folder
D:\Setup\Drivers\Win9xDrv
where D is the drive letter assigned to your CD-ROM or DVD-ROM. Click OK. - In the Save file in box, type C:\Windows\System, and then click OK.
NOTE: If you are prompted to back up the file, click Yes. If you are prompted to create a backup folder, click Yes again. - You should see the following message:
File has been extracted successfully.
Click OK, and then restart your computer.
