FP2000: You Cannot Place Two Tables Next to Each Other (301606)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft FrontPage 2000

This article was previously published under Q301606

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft FrontPage, you cannot position a table next to another table on your Web pages.

CAUSE

HTML standards prevent you from positioning tables next to each other on a Web page. You can, however, position tables above and below one another.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, organize your table with enough rows and columns to accommodate all of the Web content that you want to display. In Microsoft FrontPage, you can easily customize your table and control how it displays text and graphics on your Web pages by doing any of the following:
  • Set the table layout.

You can set the table layout by modifying the alignment of the table on the page, changing cell padding and cell spacing values, setting the way text flows in the table, or specifying the thickness of the table border.
  • Set the cell layout.

You can modify the properties of a cell and its content by specifying cell alignment, setting cells as header cells, or adjusting cell width and height.
  • Modify the appearance of rows, columns, and cells.

You can insert, delete, and resize rows, columns, and cells to control how your table appears on the page. In addition, you can split and merge cells, and adjust cell spanning values to further accommodate your data.
  • Format borders.

You can modify the colors and the thickness for the borders of individual cells or the entire table. When you are presenting graphics, you may want to hide borders by setting the border width to zero.
  • Add background colors and pictures.

Add background colors to draw attention to specific columns or rows, or use background pictures to add visual appeal.
  • Create nested tables.

A nested table is a table within a table. To create a table inside another table, position the pointer in the cell where you want to insert the table, then point to Insert on the Table menu, and then click Table. In the Insert Table dialog box, specify the properties that you want for your table, and then click OK.

MORE INFORMATION

Tables are used to display information, and lay out text and graphics on Web pages. You can use any of the following methods to create a table in FrontPage:
  • Create a simple table.
  • Draw a table.
  • Create a table by specifying table properties.
  • Convert text to a table.
After you have created a table, FrontPage offers many options to further customize the appearance of your table. You can control how the table appears on a Web page by setting the table and cell layout, modifying the appearance of cells, rows and columns, inserting table captions and table headers, formatting borders, and setting background colors and pictures.
