This article explains how to apply password protection to part, but not all, of a Microsoft FrontPage Web.

Password-protect part of your Web

To password-protect part of your FrontPage Web, follow these steps:
  1. Start Microsoft FrontPage 2000 or Microsoft FrontPage 2002.
  2. On the File menu, point to New, and then click Folder.
  3. Click and drag all of the files and documents that you want to protect to the new folder.
  4. Right-click the new folder, and then click Convert to Web.
  5. On the File menu, click Publish Web.
  6. In the Specify the location box, specify the Web server to which you want to publish your Web.

    EXAMPLE: http://www.myservername.com/mysubwebname

  7. Click Include subwebs, and then click Publish.
  8. On the File menu, click Open Web.
  9. In the Folder Name box, type server name/subweb, and then click Open.

    EXAMPLE: http://www.myservername.com/mysubwebname

  10. Type your name and password.
  11. On the Tools menu, click Security, and then click Permissions.
  12. In the Permissions dialog box, click Use unique permissions for this Web, and then click Apply.
  13. Click the Users tab, click Only registered users have browse access, and then click Add to add a user or users. To do this, follow the steps appropriate to your computer.

    Note You may need to contact your Web-hosting service provider to add the user names and passwords that you require.

    Unix-based computer

    1. A dialog box appears, which contains the text boxes described in steps b through d.
    2. In the User name box, type your user name.
    3. In the Password box, type your password.
    4. In the Password Confirmation box, type your password again to ensure that it is correct.

    Windows-based computer

    1. The Obtain list from dialog box appears, with a list of user names below it, as well as the option to set the user rights.
    2. Click the user name, click Add, and then select the appropriate permissions (for example, Browse this Web).
    3. Click OK.
