Files May Be Lost During CD-ROM Creation if You Drag and Drop Files into the Staging Area (301480)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
  • Microsoft Windows XP Professional

This article was previously published under Q301480

SYMPTOMS

It is possible to lose files if you cut and paste files into the staging area after a "Write these files to CD" operation has begun.

Although the files may successfully be cut and pasted to the staging area, after the "Write these files to CD" process has finished, they may be removed completely.

CAUSE

This results from the staging area being a read/write area even after the "Write these files to CD" process has been started.

RESOLUTION

Do not attempt to add or remove files from the staging area if the "Write these files to CD" process has already started.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

The write functionality of the staging area is not disabled after the CD-ROM creation has begun. Because of this, any data that is written to the staging area after the CD-ROM creation is started will not be written to the CD-ROM and will not be saved after the process is finished because they were not included in the list of files to write to the CD-ROM.
