Create a Subweb and Add Permissions

To create a subweb from a folder stored in an existing FrontPage Web and apply specific permissions to that subweb, follow these steps.

Create a Subweb

  1. Start Microsoft FrontPage 2000.
  2. On the File menu, click Open Web.
  3. In the Open Web dialog box, click the Web that you want or type the URL to the Web that you want in the Folder name box (for example, http://webserver). Click Open.
  4. In the Enter Network Password dialog box, type your user name, password, and domain in the corresponding boxes, and then click OK.
  5. In the Folder List pane, right-click the folder that you want to convert to a subweb. On the shortcut menu that appears, click Convert to Web.

    You receive the following message:

    Changing this folder into a Web will cause pages in it to change.

    - Pages that include files may not be updated when included files change
    - Hyperlinks on navigation bars may be removed

    Are you sure you want to do this?

  6. Click Yes.

    NOTE: The folder icon now contains a globe shape.

    Apply Security Permissions

  7. Double-click the folder that you converted to a subweb.

    The subweb is opened in a second instance of Microsoft FrontPage 2000.
  8. On the Tools menu, point to Security, and then click Permissions.
  9. In the Permissions - subweb dialog box, click Use unique permissions for this web on the Settings tab, and then click Apply.
  10. On the Users tab, click Only registered users have browse access, and then click Add.
  11. In the Add Users dialog box, click the Domain that you want in the Obtain list from list.
  12. In the Names list, click the user name that you want, and then click Add>>. Repeat this step for each user that you want to add.
  13. Under Allow users to, click the type of access that you want to allow (for example, Browse this web), and then click OK.
  14. If you want to specify the type of access for each user, click the user name that you want on the Users tab, and then click Edit.
  15. In the Edit Users dialog box, under Allow Users to, click the type of access that you want (for example, Author and browse this Web), and then click OK.
  16. Click Apply, and the click OK.
  17. On the File menu, click Close. The new security permissions are applied to the subweb.
  18. Quit FrontPage.
When you now attempt to browse to the subweb, you are prompted for your user name, password, and domain. If you click Cancel, a page similar to the following appears:
