FP98: You Cannot Log On by Using Basic Authentication (301094)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft FrontPage 98 for Windows

This article was previously published under Q301094

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to browse to a Microsoft FrontPage Server Extensions-based Web site on which Allow Anonymous Access permissions have been disabled, you may be unable to gain access to the site.

When you type your user name and password into the corresponding boxes in the Enter Network Password dialog box, the Enter Network Password dialog box reappears.

When you repeatedly attempt to log on to the Web site, you receive an error message similar to the following:
HTTP Error 401
401.1 Unauthorized: Logon Failed

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if one or both of the following conditions are true:
  • The user or group account that you use to access the Web site has not been assigned Log on Locally permissions.

    -or-
  • You do not specify the domain in which your user account resides when you type your user account information in the Enter Network Password dialog box.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use one of the following methods.

Method 1: Specify the Name of Your Domain

  1. In the Enter Network Password dialog box, type your user name in the User Name box in the following format

    Domain\username

where Domain is the name of the domain that the Web server is a member of.

NOTE: You must have a user account in this domain.
  2. In the Password box, type your password, and then click OK.

    For example:
       Enter Network Password

       User Name Microsoft\MyUserName
       Password password

Method 2: Assign the User or Group the Right to Log On Locally

NOTE: Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.
  1. Log on to the Web server computer by using an Administrator account.
  2. Start User Manager for Domains.
  3. On the Policies menu, click User Rights.
  4. In the User Rights Policy dialog box, click Log on locally in the Right list, and then click Add.
  5. In the Add Users and Groups dialog box, click Show Users.
  6. Click the user or group that you want, and then click Add.
  7. Click OK, and then click OK in the User Rights Policy dialog box.
  8. Quit User Manager for Domains.
