WD2001: Graphic from Word 2002 Appears as a Red X or Generic Graphic When Opened in Word 2001 (300954)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Word 2001 for Macintosh
This article was previously published under Q300954 SYMPTOMS
If you open a Microsoft Word 2002 document in Word 2001 for Mac, and the document contains an embedded Tagged Image File Format (TIFF) picture, the TIFF image may be displayed as a red X. If the TIFF image was inserted as a linked image, it may be displayed as a picture placeholder image (a box with a triangle, circle, and square in the center).
In addition, you may receive the following error message when you open the document:
There is not enough memory or disk space to display or print the picture.
Increasing the amount of memory allocated to Word 2001 may not resolve this issue.
CAUSE
Word 2002 incorrectly sets the Mac OS graphic type for TIFF images that are placed into the document. When Word 2001 reads the document, it places a red X in the picture frame for an embedded TIFF image and a generic graphic icon for a linked TIFF image, indicating that it does not recognize the type of graphic file.
If you open the document in Word 2002 afterward, the pictures is displayed again as expected.
RESOLUTIONTo resolve this problem, download and install the Microsoft Office 2001 Service Release 1 file. To do so, visit the following Microsoft Web site: STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
This problem was corrected in Microsoft Office 2001 for Mac Service Release 1.
