OAER: Outlook Quits Unexpectedly After You Send a Message by Using Word Mail (300935)

This article was previously published under Q300935 SYMPTOMS If you send an e-mail message in Microsoft Outlook by using
Microsoft Word 2002 as the e-mail editor, Outlook may quit unexpectedly and you
may receive the following error message: Microsoft Word
has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the
inconvenience.

here. When you view the data in the error report, the report contains
an error message that is similar to the error message that is listed at the
beginning of this article. CAUSE This issue may occur if all the following conditions are
true:
- Outlook uses Word 2002 to edit e-mail messages.
In Microsoft Outlook 2002, Word is the default e-mail
editor. - You compose a new mail message.
- You change the message format.
For example, you
change the format from HTML to Rich Text. - You send the message.
WORKAROUNDTo resolve this problem, obtain the
Microsoft Word 2002 Update: June 21, 2001. For additional information, click

Base: 300553 WD2002: Overview of the Word 2002 Public Update: June 21, 2001 To temporarily work around this issue, do not use
Word as your default editor for e-mail messages. To turn off Word
2002 as your default e-mail editor for all new messages, follow these steps:
- In the main Outlook window, click the
Tools menu, click Options, and then click the
Mail Format tab.
- Click to clear the Use Microsoft Word to edit
e-mail messages check box.

has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed
at the beginning of this article.
This problem was first corrected in the
Microsoft Word 2002 Update: June 21, 2001.
