SYMPTOMS

When you run Setup for Office XP, you may receive the following error message
The feature you are trying to use is on a CD-ROM or other removable disk that is not available.

Insert the 'Microsoft Office edition' disk and click OK.
where edition is the edition of Office 2000 that you have installed.

When you eject your Office XP CD, insert your Office 2000 CD, and then click OK, you receive the following error message:
Error 1316. Setup cannot read from file path\package.msi. Check your connection to the network, or CD-ROM drive. For other potential solutions to this problem, see
H:\Files\PFiles\MSOffice\Office10\1033\Setup.hlp.
If you click Cancel, Office XP Setup will roll back to your settings before you started Office XP Setup.

CAUSE

These error messages can occur if all of the following are true:
  • You have Office 2000 installed when you run Setup for Office XP.
  • You installed Office 2000 from CD.
  • You are installing Office XP from CD.
  • One of the following conditions is true:
    • The cached Windows Installer package (.msi) in your \Installer folder is missing.
    • You had one or more Office 2000 features set to Run from CD.
When you insert your Office 2000 CD after the first message listed in the "Symptoms" section, the Windows Installer does not prompt you again to eject your Office 2000 CD and insert your Office XP CD so that the installation can continue.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, follow these steps:
  1. Leave the dialog box with the second error message displayed.
  2. Eject your Office 2000 CD.
  3. Insert your Office XP CD.
  4. Click Retry in the dialog box that displays the second error message.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

At the point when you are prompted for your Office 2000 CD, the Windows Installer is attempting to uninstall your Office 2000 installation. Because the cached .msi file is missing from your hard disk, the Windows Installer prompts you for your Office 2000 CD in order to use the Data1.msi file on the Office 2000 CD. After the uninstall of Office 2000 is complete, the Windows Installer continues with the Office XP installation but fails with the 1316 error, because the Office 2000 CD is still in the drive.
