You May Receive Error 2136 When You Promote a Computer with the Dcpromo Tool (300463)

SYMPTOMS

When you use the Dcpromo.exe tool to promote a computer, you may receive the following error messages:
A general network error occurred - Error 2136

Flat name validation of DOMAIN failed with 2136

Request for promotion returning 2136

CAUSE

These error messages can occur if the Client for Microsoft Networks and the File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks components are not installed.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, install the File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks and the Client for Microsoft Networks components, and then run Dcpromo again.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.
