256986 Description of the Microsoft Windows Registry

SYMPTOMS

If Microsoft Outlook is not the default mail client on the Database Access Server/Consolidator-Agent Manager (DCAM), e-mail messages may not be sent and you do not receive any event information or error message that explains why the e-mail messages are not sent.

CAUSE

This behavior may occur if Microsoft Exchange Server is the message transport in Microsoft Operations Manager (MOM), but Microsoft Outlook is not the default mail client for DCAM servers that use e-mail to respond to alerts.

WORKAROUND

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

To work around this behavior, specify Outlook as the mail client if you are prompted to do so when Outlook starts. If you are not prompted to do so when Outlook starts, you can set Outlook as the default mail client by editing the registry. To do so:
  1. Start Registry Editor, and locate the following registry key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Clients\Mail

  2. Change the value for (Default) to Microsoft Outlook, and then quit Registry Editor.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

The information in this article does not apply if Simple Mail Transport Protocol (SMTP) is the e-mail server transport.
