Agent's Application Event Log Displays Error Message About Event ID 20609 After Upgrade from OM 3.22 SP1 (300349)

SYMPTOMS

After you upgrade from Operations Manager (OM) 3.22 Service Pack 1 (SP1) to Microsoft Operations Manager 2000 (MOM), any agent that is not also upgraded from OM 3.22 SP1 to MOM may repeatedly display the following error message in the agent's Application Event log:
Event Type: Error
Event Source: OnePoint Operations
Event ID: 20609
Description: Object creation failed because a COM class was not registered on this computer, or because it was registered improperly.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs if MOM sends the OM 3.22 SP1 agent a rule that the agent does not support (for example, updating a state variable as a response).

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, upgrade the agent to MOM.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
