Cannot Use MSDE Computer Group to Manage a Computer That Runs MSDE 2000 (300284)

SYMPTOMS

You may find that you cannot use the Microsoft Data Engine (MSDE) Computer Group in Microsoft Operations Manager (MOM) to manage a computer that is running MSDE 2000.

CAUSE

This issue can occur because the MSDE Computer Group and the attribute formula that it includes do not match MSDE 2000. The MSDE Computer Group does not work to manage computers that are running MSDE 2000.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, go to the MSDE Computer Group properties and, on the Include tab, add the specific MSDE 2000 computer that you want to manage in the MSDE Computer Group.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

If no current version of Microsoft SQL Server 2000 is installed, the Express installation of MOM installs the Microsoft® Data Engine (MSDE). MSDE supports up to 2 gigabytes (GB) of data and has a running query connection limit of five, which limits a MOM Express installation to 10 monitored computers.

The MSDE Computer Group is a default computer group in MOM. You can find this group under Rules in the Computer Group node of the MOM Administrative console.
