The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server
- Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5
This article was previously published under Q300186 SYMPTOMS
When a user on an Exchange 2000 or Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5 computer sends an e-mail message that is addressed to a distribution list that contains all the users on the Lotus Notes Domino Server 5 and the Exchange 2000 server, the Exchange user may receive an non-delivery report (NDR) similar to the following:
From: System Administrator
Sent: Wednesday, November 1, 2001 8:14 AM
Subject: Undeliverable: Test message
Your message did not reach some or all of the intended recipients.
Subject: Test message
Sent: 11/1/01 8:14 AM
The following recipient(s) could not be reached:
User1, Test on 11/1/01 8:14 AM
Unable to deliver the message due to the number of specified recipients of the message
Too many recipients
NOTE: Each Lotus Notes recipient in the distribution list To field is listed in the NDR.
Additionally, the following event may be in the Application log on the Exchange 2000 server or the Exchange Server 5.5 computer:
Event ID 41300
Source: MSExchangeNotes
Category: Exchange to Notes
Description: Lotus Notes has a 32K limit in the To: field
CAUSE
This behavior is caused by a limitation on the Lotus Domino server. Earlier versions of Lotus Notes have a 15-kilobyte (KB) limit.
WORKAROUND
To work around this problem:
- Synchronize the directories between Exchange and Lotus Notes through directory synchronization (dirsync).
- The Lotus Notes group will appear as a mail-enabled contact.
- Add the contact for the Lotus Notes group to an appropriate distribution group in Active Directory.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
