How to Manually Install an Agent (300127)

The manual agent setup program installs a MOM agent on the local computer and guides you through agent configuration.

To manually install an agent, follow these steps:

1. Use an administrator account to log on to the agent computer, and then quit any programs that are running.
2. Start the Setup program that is located in the Manual Agent Installation folder on the MOM CD-ROM.
3. In the Agent Installation Welcome screen, click Next.
4. Specify the folder where you want to install the MOM agent, and then click Next.
5. In the Configuration Group Name box, type the name of the configuration group you want the agent to belong to, and then click Next.
6. In the Consolidator box, type the name of the primary Consolidator computer.
   
   If you are using redundant Consolidators, type a comma-separated list of the redundant Consolidators in the Redundant Consolidators box; otherwise, leave the Redundant Consolidators box blank.
7. If you want to configure encrypted and unencrypted Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) communication ports:
   1. Click Advanced.
   2. In the Advanced Consolidator Configuration window, specify the values that you want to use, and then click OK.
   Note that if you install an agent in an environment that does not support encryption, the agent uses unencrypted communication by default. For example, the agent uses unencrypted communication in the French version of Microsoft Windows NT.
   
   
8. Click Next.
9. If the setup program displays the Consolidator Version window, make sure that the name of the Consolidator is correct and that the Consolidator computer is running version 4.00 or later.
   
   If the Consolidator is behind a firewall or is otherwise inaccessible when you run the setup program, the setup program may display a message stating that it could not determine the version of the Consolidator that is running on the primary Consolidator computer.
   
   When the Consolidator information is correct, click Next.
10. Specify the appropriate Agent Manager control level for the agent, and then click Next:
    • If you want the Agent Manager to take full control after you install the agent, and the Agent Manager has access to the agent, click Full.
    • If you want the Agent Manager to have configuration control, and the Agent Manager has access to the agent, click Scan.
    • If the agent computer is outside an internal network firewall and the Agent Manager does not have access to the agent, click None.
      
      Note that after you manually install an agent that the Agent Manager does not have access to, you must add the new agent computer to the appropriate computer groups. Because you might never scan this new agent computer, especially if it is outside the internal network firewall, forcing the computer into computer groups ensures that you can continue to collect information from this agent computer.
11. If the setup program displays the Service Stop window, read the information in the window, and then click Continue.
12. If the setup program displays the Locked Files window, free any locked files, and then click Continue. If you cannot free the files, you may need to restart the computer to complete the setup program.
13. In the Installation Complete window, click Finish.
