PRB: Restoring Archive from Server with Metadata Format to Server with Access Repository Fails (300099)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Analysis Services

This article was previously published under Q300099

SYMPTOMS

When attempting to restore an Analysis Services archive created on a server with the repository in Metadata Services Format to a server using the default Microsoft Access repository (Msmdrep.mdb), the following error message may appear:
The archived database cannot be restored to an Analysis server whose repository is stored in msmdrep.mdb.

CAUSE

When the repository is in Metadata Services Format, the data is stored in XML format. The native repository format (Microsoft Access) is not compatible with the structure of the data stored in XML format.

RESOLUTION

Migrate the repository of the destination computer to either SQL Server 7.0 format (recommended) or SQL Server Metadata Services Format. After the repository has been migrated, then restore the archive.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.

MORE INFORMATION

Steps to Reproduce Behavior

  1. On a server that has had the repository migrated to Metadata Services Format, create an archive of the FoodMart 2000 database.
  2. Restore the archive on a server using the default Microsoft Access repository.
