OFFPP: You Cannot Edit Path and Must Cancel Setup When You Receive Error 1320 (300087)

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to install Microsoft Office Personal Portfolio, you receive an error message similar to the following:
Error 1320. The specified path is too long: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office Personal Portfolio\your path name\Templates.
The message box contains Retry and Cancel buttons. There is no way to edit the path and you must cancel the installation.

CAUSE

This issue can occur when your installation folder path name exceeds the allowable length of 150 characters. The Windows Installer does not alert you to the problem until it is part of the way through the installation process.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, follow these steps:
  1. Click Cancel, and then click Yes to confirm the cancellation.
  2. Click End to quit the Windows Installer.
  3. Reinstall Microsoft Office Personal Portfolio. Use an installation location that is shorter than 150 characters. You can also accept the default location that Windows Installer provides.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
