Office Server Extensions Installation Fails When Office SR-1 Is Already Installed (299972)

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to install the Office Server Extensions (OSE) to a computer that already has Office 2000 SR-1 installed, the installation fails, and you receive the following error message:
Setup was unable to install the Microsoft Data Engine. If you continue the installation, you will need to provide the name of another machine running Microsoft SQL Server 6.5 or greater. Do you want to continue?
If you choose to continue the installation, the Office Server Extensions will not work correctly. When you try to configure the Office Server Extensions, you will not be prompted for database connectivity.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs if you previously installed the SR-1 Update for Office 2000 on the same computer.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, the products must be installed in the correct order. First install Office 2000 and then the Office Server Extensions from CD-ROM 3 of Office Premium. Finally, apply the SR-1 Update. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Uninstall Office 2000 SR-1 by following the steps in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article:

  2. Restart your computer.
  3. Reinstall Office 2000 without the SR-1 Update by following the steps in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article:

  4. Install the Office Server Extensions from Office Premium CD-ROM 3 by following the steps in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article:
