System Restore Settings Are Not Preserved During Reinstallation or Upgrade (299906)

SYMPTOMS

In the following installation scenarios, System Restore settings are not preserved:
  • You reinstall Microsoft Windows XP.
  • You upgrade your computer from Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me) to Microsoft Windows XP (Home Edition or Professional).
  • You upgrade your computer from Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition to Microsoft Windows Professional.
For example: If you upgrade a Windows Me-based computer, on which System Restore is not enabled, to Windows XP Home Edition, System Restore will be enabled by default on all drives on the computer after Setup completes.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.

In the upgrade and installation scenarios that are listed in the "Symptoms" section in this article, Setup overwrites the existing settings so that System Restore is enabled.

In operating systems in which System Restore is not included, such as Microsoft Windows 95, Microsoft Windows 98, Microsoft Windows NT Workstation, or Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional, System Restore will also be enabled by default on all drives.
