SYMPTOMS
When you start one of the games that is listed in the
"Applies to" section, you may receive an error message that is
similar to one of the following:
Intel Indeo not
installed.
Stop: You do not have the correct
video codecs installed to play contents\movies\wslag.avi
Video
not available, cannot find 'vids:iv50' Decompressor
Video not available, cannot find 'vids:iv41'
Decompressor
Also, when you start the game, the program may stop
responding ("hang") with a black screen.
RESOLUTION
Method 1: Install or reinstall Microsoft Windows audio and video compression
Note These steps only apply to Microsoft Windows 98 or Microsoft
Windows (Me)). If you do not have Windows 98 or Windows Millennium Edition (Me)
installed, use Method 2.
To verify that the audio and video
compression components of Windows are correctly installed, remove and reinstall
audio compression and video compression:
- Click Start, point to
Settings, and then click Control
Panel.
- Double-click Add/Remove
Programs.
- On the Windows Setup tab, click
Multimedia, and then click
Details.
- Clear the Audio Compression and
Video Compression check boxes.
- Click OK, and then click
Apply.
- Follow the instructions on the screen. You may be prompted
to insert your Windows CD-ROM or floppy disks.
- Quit Control Panel.
If the issue continues to occur, go to the next method.
Method 2: Install Microsoft Windows Media Player
Windows Media Player will install updated codecs. To download and
install the latest version of Windows Media player, visit the following
Microsoft Web site:

If the issue continues to occur, go to the
next method.
Method 3: Install the codec for Windows XP Service Pack 1 (SP1)
Follow the steps for your version of Windows.

You can download the codec from the Windows Update Web site.

Game stops responding (hangs) or quits unexpectedly when introductory video clip is played
If the issue continues to occur, go to the next method.
Method 4: Do not play the introductory movie
Some games play an introductory movie when the game starts.
See the manual for the game to learn how to disable the startup movie.
For Links games, remove the Links CD from your CD or DVD drive to skip the introductory movie.
If the issue continues to occur, go to the next method.
Method 5: Temporarily disable the sound card
- Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
- Double-click the System icon.
- Click the Hardware tab, and then click Device Manager under Device Manager.
- Double-click the name of your sound card.
- Under Device Usage, click Do not use this device (disable).
- Restart Windows, and then test the program.
- To return to your original sound configuration, follow steps 1 through 6. However, in step 5, click Use this device (enable).
