Error Message When You Open .cda Files: Windows Media Player Does Not Support This File Type (298845)

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to open a .cda file in Microsoft Windows Media Player 7 or 7.1, you may receive an error message similar to the following:
Windows Media Player does not support this file type.
-OR-

Windows Media Player 7 or 7.1 may lock or freeze when attempting to open a .cda file.

CAUSE

This problem can occur if the CD Audio device driver is missing or damaged.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Do one of the following:
    • For Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me), double-click Sounds and Multimedia.

      -or-
    • For Microsoft Windows 98 or Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition, double-click Multimedia.
  3. Click the Devices tab.
  4. Click the plus sign in front of Media Control Devices.
  5. Click CD Audio Device (Media Control), and then click Properties.
  6. Click Remove.

    When you receive a message prompting you to confirm the removal, click Yes.
  7. After the CD Audio is removed, restart your computer.
  8. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  9. Double-click Add New Hardware.

    The Add New Hardware Wizard starts.
  10. Click Next twice.
  11. Click No, I want to select the hardware from a list, and then click Next.
  12. Under Hardware types, click Sound, video and game controllers, and then click Next
  13. Under Manufacturers, click Microsoft MCI.
  14. Under Models, click CD Audio Device (Media Control), and then click Next.
  15. Click Finish.

    Your computer copies files from the Windows source folder.
  16. When the process is complete, restart your computer.
