Error Message When You Open .cda Files: Windows Media Player Does Not Support This File Type (298845)

When you attempt to open a .cda file in Microsoft Windows Media Player 7 or 7.1, you may receive an error message similar to the following:
Windows Media Player does not support this file type.
-OR-
Windows Media Player 7 or 7.1 may lock or freeze when attempting to open a .cda file.
CAUSE
This problem can occur if the CD Audio device driver is missing or damaged.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem, follow these steps:
- Click Start, point to Settings, and then click
Control Panel.
- Do one of the following:
- For Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me), double-click Sounds and Multimedia.
-or- - For Microsoft Windows 98 or Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition, double-click Multimedia.
- Click the Devices tab.
- Click the plus sign in front of Media Control Devices.
- Click CD Audio Device (Media Control), and then click Properties.
- Click Remove.
When you receive a message prompting you to confirm the removal, click Yes. - After the CD Audio is removed, restart your computer.
- Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
- Double-click Add New Hardware.
The Add New Hardware Wizard starts.
- Click Next twice.
- Click No, I want to select the hardware from a list, and then click Next.
- Under Hardware types, click Sound, video and game controllers, and then click Next
- Under Manufacturers, click Microsoft MCI.
- Under Models, click CD Audio Device (Media Control), and then click Next.
- Click Finish.
Your computer copies files from the Windows source folder. - When the process is complete, restart your computer.
