FIX: Query Analyzer Stops Responding and Cannot be Started Until Visual Studio Analyzer is Stopped (298828)

SYMPTOMS
While the Visual Studio Analyzer is active, the SQL Server Query Analyzer window may not appear. After you select Query Analyzer from the Start menu, an hourglass icon displays briefly. However, the Query Analyzer window does not display when the hourglass icon reverts back. Both the SQL Server Profiler and Index Tuning Wizard also display the same symptoms.
This problem is observed only when the following products are installed on the same computer:
- Microsoft Windows 2000 or Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Server
- Microsoft Visual Studio Enterprise Edition (including Visual Studio Analyzer)
- SQL Server 2000

WORKAROUND
To work around this problem, disable the Visual Studio Analyzer. You can use the steps that follow to disable Visual Studio Analyzer.
Microsoft Windows 2000- On the Taskbar click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Data Sources (ODBC).
- Click the Tracing tab in the ODBC Administrator dialog box.
- Click Stop Visual Studio Analyzer to stop the Visual Studio Analyzer. If the command button is titled Start Visual Studio Analyzer before being clicked, then you are not being affected by the problem described in this article.
- After you click Stop Visual Studio Analyzer, the title changes to Start Visual Studio Analyzer. Now, if an attempt is made to open the SQL Server Query Analyzer window, the window opens successfully.
Microsoft Windows NT 4.0- On the Taskbar click Start, point to Settings, and then double-click Control Panel. In the Control Panel dialog box, click ODBC Data Source Administrator.
- Click the Tracing tab in the ODBC Administrator dialog box.
- Click Stop Visual Studio Analyzer. If the command button is titled Start Visual Studio Analyzer before being clicked, then you are not being affected by the problem described in this article.
- After you click the button, the title changes to Start Visual Studio Analyzer. Now, if an attempt is made to open the SQL Server Query Analyzer window, the window opens successfully.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in SQL Server 2000.
This problem was first corrected in Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 2.
