The information in this article applies to:

  • FrontPage 2002 Server Extensions from Microsoft
  • SharePoint Team Services from Microsoft

This article was previously published under Q298745
For a Microsoft FrontPage 2000 version of this article, see 229559.

SYMPTOMS

When you close a file that is checked out from either a Microsoft FrontPage Web or a SharePoint team Web site that is using built-in version control, the file remains checked out. A Web administrator cannot check the file back in for you. The file remains checked out until you check it in.

CAUSE

The built-in source control in SharePoint Team Services and FrontPage 2002 is designed to be a light-weight source control solution.

To use advanced features, such as versioning and administration, use Microsoft Visual SourceSafe. For additional information about Visual SourceSafe, visit the following Microsoft Web site:

WORKAROUND

Manually check in the file. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. As an administrator, log on to the Web server locally.
  2. Run Windows NT Explorer and locate the folder containing the document that is checked out.
  3. Open the "_vti_cnf" subfolder of this folder.
  4. Locate the document that has the same name as the document that is checked out and open it in Notepad.
  5. Locate the following three lines and delete them:
    • vti_sourcecontrolmultiuserchkoutby:
    • vti_sourcecontrolcheckedoutby:
    • vti_sourcecontroltimecheckedout:
  6. Save the file and close Notepad.
  7. If the Web is open in FrontPage, refresh the Web.
