OL2000: Outlook Stops Responding if You Send a Message to Three or More Personal Distribution Lists from Your Contacts Folder (298407)

SYMPTOMS

When you send a message to three or more personal distribution lists (PDL) from your Contacts folder that are not in your Outlook 2000 Address Book, it may cause access violation and you may receive the following error message:
Outlook.exe - Application Error
------------------------------------------------------------------
"The instruction at "0xXXXXXXXX" referenced memory at "0xXXXXXXXX"
The memory could not be "Read"

CAUSE

This problem can occur because Outlook 2000 cannot obtain the folder properties when a Contacts folder does not appear in an Outlook Address Book.

RESOLUTION

A supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Apply it only to computers that are experiencing this specific problem. This fix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Microsoft Office 2000 service pack that contains this hotfix.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, display the Contacts folder in your Outlook 2000 Address Book. To do this:
  1. Right-click the Contacts folder, and then click Properties.
  2. Click the Outlook Address Book tab.
  3. Click to select the Show the Contacts folder in Address Book check box, and then click OK.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
