Downlevel Printers Not Being Pruned (298283)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows XP Professional

This article was previously published under Q298283

SYMPTOMS

If you enable the Prune printers that are not automatically re-published policy and you set the policy to Whenever printer is not found, you may find that downlevel printers are not being pruned. The downlevel printers appear in the search results when you use the Find Printers function from the domain controller.

RESOLUTION

To work around this behavior, do not use the domain controller to publish or to query on published printers. Use an independent workstation computer; otherwise, printers that are no longer in use appear in the Directory Service and you cannot delete these printers.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
