You May Be Unable to Browse Internet Sites When You Use Intranet Browse (298192)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Mobile Information 2001 Server
This article was previously published under Q298192 SYMPTOMS
When you use Mobile Information 2001 Server to browse an intranet page that has a link to an external Internet site, and you select the link to that external site, you may receive the following error message:
Error 404 Page Not Found
The links to other intranet sites, however, that are in the access list for Intranet Browse work.
CAUSE
This problem can occur because the Intranet Browse component adds a link to the Intranet Browse virtual root of every Uniform Resource Locator (URL) that is accessed from Mobile Information Server.
For example, you have a intranet page with an http://webserver/sales/ URL.
When you access this page from the Internet with a Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) browser by means of the
Intranet Browse component of Mobile Information Server, the preceding URL can now resemble the following URL:
http://mmis.corp.com/in/webserver/sales/
If you click a link that is contained in the index page that is on the sales server that links to an external site, such as, the http://www.microsoft.com/miserver/ URL, that URL is prefixed with the http://mmis.corp.com/in/ URL, and now resembles the following URL:
http://mmis.corp.com/in/www.microsoft.com/misserver/
This link can fail: Instead of giving you the link to your device to connect to the http://www.microsoft.com/miserver/ URL, Mobile Information Server attempts to browse to an intranet server called "\\www.microsoft.com", which results in the "page not found" error.
This behavior occurs even if the device is capable of browsing the Internet site directly.
WORKAROUND
To work around this problem, view the desired Internet URL directly in the WAP browser of your device from your data connection by means of your wireless carrier, and not by means of Mobile Information Server.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. MORE INFORMATION
In certain topologies the Mobile Information Server may be able to actually connect to the Internet directly and retrieve the URL from the Internet or extranet site. However, most installations are behind a firewall in a demilitarized zone (DMZ). Also, in the Intranet Browse access list, under the properties of Mobile Information Server Installation in the System Manager Microsoft Management Console (MMC), the value that is entered must be the name of a Web server. You cannot specify a particular virtual folder or intranet page.
