Audio and Video Degrade When You Encode from a Digital Video Source (298185)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows Media Encoder 7.1

This article was previously published under Q298185

SYMPTOMS

When you use a Digital Video (DV) source, the Windows Media Encoder may eventually start to drop audio samples. In addition to poor audio encoding, the frame rate may start to drop as well.

CAUSE

This problem is related to the performance of the encoding machine. The encoding machine needs to decode DV data, re-size uncompressed data, and compress the data into Windows Media format. These processes are all very CPU intensive.

RESOLUTION

Select a profile with a lower bit rate.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Windows Media Encoder version 7.1.

MORE INFORMATION

With the 7.x release, the Osprey 500 card is the only supported card with hardware DV decompression.
