No Audio Is Encoded When Source is Stopped and Restarted During Encoding (298181)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows Media Encoder 7.1

This article was previously published under Q298181

SYMPTOMS

When you use a Digital Video (DV) device as a source, if you stop and restart the device while the Encoder is running, the Encoder does not capture the audio.

CAUSE

When you stop a DV device while the Encoder is running, audio "silence" is automatically inserted until you start the DV device again. When you restart the DV device, the Encoder automatically discards the audio data because the timestamps on the audio packet indicate to the Encoder that the samples are behind.

WORKAROUND

Audio will begin to encode again if you stop and restart the Encoder.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Windows Media Encoder version 7.1.
