This article describes the permissions that are required to successfully move a mailbox from Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5 to Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server.

When you perform a Move Mailbox operation, data from the source message store is transferred to the target message store. The Move Mailbox operation uses the credentials of the user who is performing the operation to update both the Exchange 5.5 directory and Active Directory. When you perform a Move Mailbox operation, you must have the following rights or the equivalent for this operation to succeed:
  • Permissions required on the Exchange 5.5 directory:
    • You must have the Administrator role for the Site Naming Context and the Configuration Naming Context (/o=Org/ou=Site of the mailbox to be moved).
  • Permissions required on Active Directory:
    • You must be a member of either the Domain Administrator or Account Operators group for the local Active Directory domain.
    • You must have the Exchange Server Administrator role for the administrative group.
To perform a Move Mailbox operation, start the Active Directory Users and Computers snap-in, right-click a user object, click Exchange Tasks, and then click Move Mailbox. You can now choose between the servers, storage groups, and mailbox stores within the same administrative group as the user's existing mailbox.
