SYMPTOMS

When you use Window Media Player version 7.1 to play .asf files, the player successfully buffers the content and the content starts playing. After a few seconds, however, the program may stop and you may receive the following error message:
Visual C++ Run Time Error: Abnormal program termination

CAUSE

This behavior can occur because of the video card driver. The following configurations generate the error message:
  • The Windows 98 Plug and Play STB Velocity 128 video driver version 4.10.1713 (dated 5/11/1998)
  • The Windows 98 Second Edition Plug and Play STB Velocity 128 video driver version 4.10.1713 (dated 4/23/1999)
  • The Windows Millennium Edition Plug and Play STB Velocity 128 video driver version 4.11.01.0348 (dated 6/08/2000)
  • The Windows 2000 Professional Plug and Play STB Velocity 128 video driver version 5.00.2165.0343 (dated 9/19/1999)

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, contact the manufacturer of the video card to ask about availability of an updated driver that addresses this behavior.
