SYMPTOMS

If you change the sound volume by using function keys or special volume-control keys on your keyboard, the volume settings may be changed after you restart your computer. Also, if the Volume Control tool is running, you may see the Volume Control slider change as you adjust the volume, but the slider may be reset to its original position after you restart your computer.

CAUSE

This problem can occur if the following conditions exist:
  • You are using a Windows Driver Model (WDM) audio driver.
  • You adjusted the volume settings by pressing the appropriate volume or mute key on your computer keyboard, or by using one of the following key combinations:
    • FN+PAGE UP (increase volume)
    • FN+PAGE DOWN (decrease volume)
    • FN+END (mute)

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, make sure you are running the latest WDM driver for your sound card. For information about how to obtain the latest drivers, contact the manufacturer of your computer or sound card or search for your sound card in the Microsoft Windows Hardware Compatibility List: If you are running the latest drivers, install the following fix. A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that this article describes. Apply it only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.
