256986 Description of the Microsoft Windows Registry
SYMPTOMS
When you reinstall Office, either in Maintenance Mode or after you completely remove Office, modifications that you made with a Custom Installation Wizard (CIW) transform are not used.
None of the files, registry keys, added installations, or programs that you included in the transform are reinstalled or run again. For example, if you add a file called Test.txt to your transform, and you run Office Setup for the first time, Test.txt is installed to the specified folder. However, if you manually delete Test.txt and then click Reinstall in Maintenance Mode Setup, Test.txt is not reinstalled.
If you remove Office, Test.txt is not removed. If you then run Setup by using the same transform, Test.txt is not installed on this second installation of Office, even if you manually delete it before you run Office Setup.
CAUSE
Any files, registry keys, shortcuts, or added installations and programs are considered user data. Therefore, to protect any changes that may have been made to these items, the changes are not lost during a reinstallation of Office.
RESOLUTIONTo Determine the Product Code
To find the Product Code for the Office product that you installed, follow these steps:
- Locate and select the transform that you used with Office Setup.
- Right-click the transform, and then click Properties on the shortcut menu.
- Click the Statistics tab in Properties.
- Look at the first 36 characters, including the dashes (-), between the braces {} listed next to Revision Number.
NOTE: On Microsoft Windows 2000, the Product Code appears on the Summary tab and is called the Revision number.
To Force the Reinstallation of Files, Registry Keys, and ShortcutsWARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may
require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve
problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own
risk.
To force the reinstallation of files, registry keys, shortcuts, and user settings from a transform, follow these steps:
- Click Start and then click Run.
- In the Open box, type regedit and then move to the following key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\OfficeCustomizeWizard\2.0\RegKeyPaths
- Select the subkey below RegKeyPaths that matches the Product Code (a GUID) for the Office product that you installed. To determine the Product Code, see the "To Determine the Product Code" section of this article.
- Delete the value OCWAddedContentWritten_PerUser_Permanent.
- On the Registry menu, click Exit.
To Force an Additional Program to Run
If you added a program to run after the Office installation, the steps to follow vary, depending on how you configured the program to run when you created your transform.
Determining How the Additional Program Was Configured
If you are not sure how the additional program was configured to run, please follow these steps:
- Start the Custom Installation Wizard (CIW).
- In the Open the MST File dialog box, select Open an existing MST file, and then browse to your existing transform (.mst) file. Click Next.
- In the Select the MST File to Save dialog box, click Next.
- Click Yes when prompted to overwrite the existing MST file.
- Continue through the CIW dialog boxes until you reach the Add Installations and Run Programs dialog box.
Any program that you specified to run with the Office installation will be listed along with its configuration type, for example, [per user] [every time].
- Click Cancel and then click Yes to quit the CIW.
- Use the steps outlined in either the "Programs Configured to Run Per User" section or the "Programs Configured to Run Per Machine" section later in this article.
