This article was previously published under Q297982

SYMPTOMS

When you stop the Mobile Information Server Exchange 5.5 Data Provider service, the Mobile Information Server Exchange 5.5 Data Provider service automatically restarts. If you attempt to start the service and you do not refresh your services view, you may receive the following error message:
An instance of the service is already running.

CAUSE

The Mobile Information Server Exchange 5.5 Data Provider service, or the Mmis55mbx.exe file, is a Component Services (COM+) service. When you attempt to access the OMA55 virtual root on the Mobile Information Server, Internet Information Server (IIS) and the Message Processor service create a new process.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, you can prevent the Exchange 5.5 Data Provider service from restarting by stopping the Mobile Information Server Message Processor service, as well as the Exchange 5.5 Data Provider service.

NOTE: Wait 20 seconds when cycling COM+ services to make sure that all of the out-of-process processes stop completely.

MORE INFORMATION

This behavior is by design.
