SYMPTOMS

When you change the installation state of a feature, the installation state of other features unexpectedly changes.

For example, if you change the installation state of Microsoft Access Help to Run from My Computer, the installation state of Typical Wizard, Additional Wizards, and Database Replication changes to Run from My Computer.

CAUSE

For all of the features listed in the "More Information" section of this article, Not Available is not an installation state that can be directly set in the Choose installation options for all Office applications and tools dialog box. These features can be indirectly set to Not Available by setting the installation state of the parent program to Not Available.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

Child features inherit the installation state of the parent feature when you set the parent feature to Not Available. For example, setting the installation state of Microsoft Access to Not Available changes the installation state of all the child features of Access to Not Available.

If you change the installation state of one of the following programs to Not Available, you change the installation state of the child features for that product to Not Available:
  • Microsoft Access for Windows
  • Microsoft Outlook for Windows
However, when you also change the installation state of any of the following features, the installation state of its siblings will also change: Access
  • Help
  • Typical Wizards
  • Additional Wizards
  • Database Replication
Outlook
  • Help
  • Outlook Messaging Components
NOTE: The Not Available installation state is not an option for the Help feature under all of the Office program features. Therefore, if you change the parent program feature to Not Available and then change any child feature (not just those listed earlier in this article), the installation state of the Help feature always changes to match that of the sibling feature that you just changed.
