SUMMARY

This article describes what happens when you specify a time for synchronization of performance data for a Microsoft Windows NT Performance Counter provider.

MORE INFORMATION

You can find the Windows NT Performance Counter providers in the MOM Administrator console. Expand Rules, expand Advanced, expand Providers, click Windows NT Performance Counter, and then click the Synchronization tab in the properties dialog box. Selecting the Synchronize at check box lets you set the time at which MOM starts counting events during the sampling periods for this counter.

Note that the synchronization time tells MOM to begin synchronization at the specified time during the preceding 24-hour period. MOM looks back to the specified time to see what events occurred, and reports those. For example, assuming the specified sampling interval is one hour:
  • If the time is now 3 P.M. (Greenwich mean time -5) and you set the synchronization time to 2 P.M. (Greenwich mean time -5), synchronization reporting covers the one-hour interval from 2 P.M. to 3 P.M. today.
  • If the time is now 3 P.M. and you set the synchronization time to 4 P.M. (Greenwich mean time -5), synchronization reporting covers the one-hour interval from 4 P.M. to 5 P.M. yesterday. MOM then begins a new synchronization cycle today when the time at the server is 4 P.M.
When an agent downloads rules, it uses the Synchronize at time to calculate when the next sample is taken. For example, suppose your sampling period for a counter is one hour and you set synchronization for 12:15 A.M. If the time is now 3:30 P.M., the first sample is taken at 4:15 P.M. because MOM is in the middle of a sampling interval and is not going to return partial data.
