No E-mail Messages Arrive and an Error Message Says You Need a Later Version of Mapi32.dll (297763)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Operations Manager 2000

This article was previously published under Q297763

SYMPTOMS

After you configure Microsoft Operations Manager (MOM) for e-mail, you may not receive messages. The application log of the Consolidator server may record Event ID 21404, and the following error message may appear:
Microsoft Operations Manager has detected version XXX.X of the MAPI subsystem (mapi32.dll). Version XXX.X or later is required and can be loaded by installing XXXX. Email responses have been disabled.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur because MOM requires a later version of the Mapi32.dll file than is currently installed.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, install version 5.5.2174.0 or later of the MAPI subsystem (Mapi32.dll). You can load this recommended version by installing Outlook 98.

If you are using Outlook 2000 with Windows 2000, note that the version numbering system has changed. The minimum version requirement for Mapi32.dll in Windows 2000 is 1.0.2536.0.
