The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows Media Player for Windows XP Home Edition
  • Microsoft Windows Media Player for Windows XP Professional

This article was previously published under Q297732

SYMPTOMS

When you are playing Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI) files in Windows Media Player, you may be unable to mute the playback. However, you may still be able to control the audio through the Volume Control tool.

CAUSE

As of July 2001, the DirectShow MIDI renderer (which uses the mixer Application Programming Interface) is used to control MIDI volume. The MIDI mixer is global, and because any program can control it, the program that used it last has control.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
