PRB: Windows Media Player 7 or 7.1 Installation with a Power User Account Fails Without a Warning (297541)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows Media Player 7
  • Microsoft Windows Media Player 7.1

This article was previously published under Q297541

SYMPTOMS

When a member of the Power Users group tries to upgrade from Windows Media Player 6.4 to Windows Media Player 7 or 7.1, the installation process completes without any error. At the end of the installation, the computer restarts. However, Windows Media Player 7 (or 7.1) does not install. The Windows Media Player shortcut still points to version 6.4. If you double-click any .asf file, the file opens in Windows Media Player 6.4 instead of 7 (or 7.1).

NOTE: After you install the Windows Media Player update as a Power User, the system does not update all drivers appropriately. However, the installation seems to finish without any obvious errors. In some test scenarios, this may render the CD-ROM drive unusable also.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, use an account with Administrator privileges to install Windows Media Player 7 or 7.1.

STATUS
