The USB Controller Is Not Recognized and a Code 10 Error Message Appears in Device Manager (297511)

SYMPTOMS

On a computer whose motherboard has a Silicon Integrated Systems (SIS) chipset, Device Manager may display the following error message for the USB controller:
Code 10 - the device cannot start.
If you manually update the USB controller driver in Device Manager, the controller may seem to be installed correctly. However, the controller reverts to the "code 10" status when you restart the computer.

This behavior is known to occur on the PCCHIPS M741LMRT motherboard and on the SIS 530 motherboard. The USB controller is listed in the Device Manager as SIS 7001 PCI to USB Open Host Controller.

CAUSE

This behavior can be caused by an incorrect basic input/output system (BIOS) setting. The system BIOS has a setting for DOS USB function.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, disable the DOS USB function in the system BIOS. For information about how to do this, refer to the documentation for your computer.
