SYMPTOMS

When you use a Linear Tape-Open (LTO) tape drive with Remote Storage, you receive the following error message:
No supported media type was found on this computer.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur because most LTO formats are not supported by Remote Storage. Remote Storage provides support for 4 millimeter (mm), 8 mm, and digital linear tape (DLT) formats.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.

MORE INFORMATION

Warning If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

Most LTO tape drives are not supported in Removable Storage and cannot be used with the backup program that is included with Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition and with Windows 2000. Currently, only the Ultrium LTO format is supported.

Note You must add an entry in the Windows registry on your computer to support the Ultrium LTO device. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type regedt32, and then click OK.
  2. Locate and click the following registry subkey:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Remote_Storage_Server\Parameters

Note You may have to create the Remote_Storage_Server and Parameters subkeys.
  3. Click Parameters, and then click Add Value on the Edit menu.
  4. Type TapeTypesToSupport, click REG_MULTI_SZ from the Data Type list, click OK, type 86, and then click OK.
  5. Quit Registry Editor.
