SUMMARY

This article describes how to install Microsoft Operations Manager 2000 (MOM) agents on computers that are not in a domain, are in a domain that does not have a trust relationship with the domain that contains the MOM server, or connect through a remote access connection.

MORE INFORMATION

The only supported method of installing agents on such computers is to manually install the agent.
  1. Manually install the MOM agent, specifying an Agent Manager control value of "None." For additional information about manually installing MOM agents, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

300127 How to Manually Install an Agent

  2. Create an entry for each agent in the Manualmc.txt file:
    1. On the MOM server, open a new text file, and then type the names of the computers on which the agents will be installed. Type one computer name on each line of the text file.
    2. Save the file as Manualmc.txt in the InstallRoot\Program Files\Microsoft Operations Manager 2000\OnePoint folder.

NOTE: The "Microsoft Operations Manager 2000" folder is the default installation folder. Your installation folder may have a different name.
  3. Manually add the agent to each computer group to which it belongs. You must do this to permit the agent to receive the rules that are associated with each computer group to which you add the agent:
    1. In the MOM administrator console, locate the Rules\Computer Groups node. You must explicitly include the manually installed computer in each computer group for which you want it to receive rules.
    2. For each computer group to which you want to add the agent, right-click the computer group, and then click Properties.
    3. Click the Included Computers tab, and then click Add.
    4. Type the domain name and the computer name, using "equals" clauses for both.
  4. Add the agent to the Managed Computer Rules in Agent Manager, and then perform an Agent Manager scan:
    1. In the MOM administrator console, open the Configuration\Agent Managers node. In the right pane, open the properties for the MOM Server.
    2. Under Managed Computer Rules in Agent Manager properties, click Add. This opens the Managed Computer Rule Properties - Include dialog box.
    3. Confirm that Include is selected, and then click Next.
    4. In the right-most dialog box, add the computer name of the computer on which the agent will be installed. In the left-most dialog box, specify a conditional (such as equals, contains a substring, matches a wildcard, or any other available conditional). You must type the computer name in the Domain name box before the Apply button becomes available.
    5. After you click Apply, either permit the system to perform a scheduled Managed Computer scan (by default, this occurs at 2:05 A.M.), or click Scan Managed Computers Now on the Managed Computer Scan tab. The Scan Managed Computers At section of the Managed Computer Scan tab shows the scan frequency and time of day at which scans are configured to run.
