SUMMARY

This article describes the procedures for installing Microsoft Operations Manager (MOM) agents on remote computers.

MORE INFORMATION

To install the MOM agents remotely, create a Managed Computer Rule, identify the available remote computers, and then approve and process the pending installations of agents. When you finish these procedures, review important installation information.

Create a Managed Computer Rule

  1. In the MOM Microsoft Management Console (MMC), expand Configuration.
  2. Click Agent Managers, and then double-click the Agent Manager that appears in the right pane of the MMC.
  3. The Managed Computer Rule that you specified during installation appears on the Managed Computer Rules tab. If you want to create additional Managed Computer Rules, click Add.

Computers that match Managed Computer Rules of the type include are available for agent installation. Computers that match rules of the type exclude are not available for agent installation.
  4. After you configure the Managed Computer Rules, click Apply, and then click OK.

Scan for available computers

  1. Right-click Agent Manager in the left pane, and then click Scan All Managed Computers.

The status field for the Agent Manager in the right pane changes periodically. To see these changes, click the Agent Manager in the right pane, and then press F5 to update the display.
  2. When the Agent Manager finishes the scan, the Agent Manager status is reported as idle. To see all the computers that are available for installation of agents, right-click Pending Installations in the left pane, and then click Refresh.

Approve the pending installations

  1. In the right pane of the Pending Installations display, right-click the entry for an installation, and then click Approve Pending Action.
  2. After you click Approve Pending Action for each computer where you want to install an agent, right-click Pending Installations, and then click Process All Approved Actions. Run another scan to complete the installation process.
  3. To monitor the Agent Manager's progress in installing agents, click the Agent Managers node, click the Agent Manager in the right pane, and then press F5 to update the status.
  4. When the Agent Manager finishes, its status is again reported as idle. The agents are now installed, but you must restart the affected computers in order for the agents to function.
To view any important issues that the Agent Manager may log during the installation of agents, expand Monitor, and then click All Open Alerts. If necessary, update the screen to see the Agent Manager's alerts.

To view important installation information under two nodes, the Agent Installation Failures node and the Agents Requiring Reboot to Complete Installation node, expand Monitor, expand Public Views, expand Microsoft Operations Manager, and then click Agent Managers.
