To configure MOM to monitor and collect syslog messages from UNIX-based computers, first configure MOM to process the syslog messages, and then configure the UNIX-based computers to forward the syslog messages to a computer where a MOM agent has been installed. The agent can then create events for these messages.

The following steps summarize the procedure for configuring MOM and the applicable UNIX-based computers:
  1. Configure MOM to process syslog messages:
    1. Create a syslog provider.
    2. Create a Computer Group for the computers that are to receive syslog messages.
    3. Create a Processing Rule Group and the necessary processing rules to process the syslog messages.
  2. Configure each UNIX-based computer to forward syslog messages to a computer that is in the syslog Computer Group.
