Netdiag.exe Does Not Query SPN Registration When Down-Level Name Is Different (297384)

When you use the Netdiag.exe tool to view network configurations and settings, you may receive the following error message in the console and the Netdiag.log file:
[WARNING] Failed to query SPN registration on DC 'DNS domain name'.
CAUSE
This problem can occur when the down-level NetBIOS domain name is different than the DNS domain name. This configuration is made possible by the DCPROMO process, and is not necessarily a cause for concern.

Note that the hotfix that is described in this article only resolves this problem in situations where the two domain names differ.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 3.
