XADM: Description of Account Creation in the Exchange 2000 SP1 Migration Wizard (297349)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server
This article was previously published under Q297349 SUMMARY
When you use the enhanced version of Migration Wizard that is installed by Exchange 2000 Service Pack 1 (SP1), you can migrate Exchange Server 5.5 user mailboxes and e-mail addresses into Exchange 2000 and Active Directory. The Exchange Server 5.5 migration component of Migration Wizard creates new Windows 2000 accounts or matches existing Windows 2000 accounts if certain conditions prevail. Because there are several scenarios for account creation or account matching, this article describes the conditions of each scenario.
MORE INFORMATION
Migration Wizard does not migrate any mailbox data until target Windows accounts that match certain criteria are present in Active Directory. The scenarios that are listed in this section describe how Windows accounts are created or matched by Migration Wizard for Exchange 2000.
Creating Clean Accounts The enhanced version of Migration Wizard automatically generates new Windows user accounts if Active Directory has no users or contacts whose account logon names are the same as Exchange Server 5.5 mailbox aliases. The new Microsoft Windows 2000 account names are named after the Exchange Server 5.5 mailbox aliases.
Uniqueness Conflict If a Windows 2000 user or contact has been manually created in Active Directory and has a logon name that matches an Exchange Server 5.5 mailbox alias, Migration Wizard warns you about a naming conflict, and then prompts you to specify a new Windows 2000 account name. After you type a unique name that does not match another common name in Active Directory, the account is created.
Creating Accounts Using the Active Directory Migration Tool (ADMT) You can use the ADMT to generate Windows 2000 accounts before you use Migration Wizard, but only if Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 user Security Identifiers (SIDs) were migrated to Active Directory by using ADMT. In this case, the enhanced version of Migration Wizard matches existing accounts SIDs (not mailboxes) between source and target directories. Creating Active Directory Accounts That Are Already Mapped to Exchange Server 5.5 Mailboxes If mailboxes in the Exchange Server 5.5 folder are already associated with the same Windows 2000 accounts that are going to be mail-enabled, Migration Wizard automatically finds the SIDs that are associated with each Exchange Server 5.5 mailbox, and matches the Exchange Server 5.5 mailbox with the appropriate Windows 2000 account. To determine if an Exchange Server 5.5 mailbox is already mapped to a Windows 2000 account, follow these steps:
- Start the Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5 Administrator program.
- Browse to the Exchange Server 5.5 mailbox that you plan to migrate, and then open the properties of the mailbox.
- Click the General tab, a Windows 2000 account that uses the DOMAIN\USERNAME format is displayed in the Primary Windows NT Account box. If DOMAIN is the same as a downlevel NetBIOS name of an Active Directory domain, Migration Wizard migrates data into the target mailbox of your Active Directory domain. To determine the downlevel NetBIOS name of a domain, open the properties of your domain in the Active Directory Users and Computers snap-in. This information is displayed in the Pre-Windows 2000 domain box.
Creating an Account Using the Active Directory Connector (ADC) You can install the ADC to replicate directory information between Exchange Server 5.5 and Active Directory. You can use this connector to facilitate account creation. However, before you use the ADC, you must configure it with an interorganizational recipient Connection Agreement (CA). You must also configure the CA to create contacts in Active Directory, and not enabled or disabled user accounts. Migration Wizard matches Exchange Server 5.5 mailboxes with the contacts that are generated by the recipient CA, converts the contacts into disabled Windows accounts, and then migrates mailbox data.
After Migration Wizard migrates all mailbox data, Windows 2000 users cannot access their new Exchange 2000 mailboxes until the recipient update service (RUS) has written a series of mail attributes to the users' accounts.
