This article was previously published under Q297325 SYMPTOMS
When you install a Microsoft game controller, the game controller may not be displayed in either the System Device Manager or in the list of game controllers under Gaming Options or Game Controllers in Control Panel.
CAUSE
This behavior can occur if you have not shut down the computer since you installed the game controller.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, follow these steps:
- Unplug the controller from the universal serial bus (USB) port.
- Shut down the computer.
NOTE: The computer must be shut down, not restarted or set to hibernate. - Insert the controller's USB connector securely into the USB port.
- Start the computer.
Microsoft Windows attempts to find the controller's driver in the Windows driver database as the computer starts up. - Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
- Double click Gaming Options or Game Controllers.
- If the game pad is not listed on the Controllers or General tab, use other USB-troubleshooting techniques.
NOTE: The Sidewinder Plug & Play Game Pad may be listed as a 2-axis/6-button HID-compliant game controller.
