This article was previously published under Q297305 SYMPTOMS
After you install or upgrade to Windows 2000, you may receive the following error message:
STOP B4 error, VIDEO_DRIVER_FAILED_TO_LOAD
CAUSE
This behavior can occur if the VgaSave service is not set to SERVICE_SYSTEM_START or if one of the following files is missing or becomes corrupted:
%SystemRoot%\System32\Vga.dll
%SystemRoot%\System32\Vga.drv
RESOLUTION
To resolve this behavior, make sure that the VgaSave service is set to SERVICE_SYSTEM_START and then, if necessary, replace the Vga.dll and Vga.drv files:
- Start the computer by using the Windows 2000 Setup floppy disks or the Windows 2000 CD-ROM. At the "Welcome to Setup" screen, press R to repair, and then press C to start the Recovery Console.
- Enter the number for the appropriate Windows 2000 installation, and then type the Administrator account password.
- At the Recovery Console prompt, to view the status of the VgaSave service, type listsvc, and then press ENTER.
- If the VgaSave service is not set to SERVICE_SYSTEM_START, at the Recovery Console prompt, type enable vgasave SERVICE_SYSTEM_START, and then press ENTER.
- If the VgaSave service is already set to SERVICE_SYSTEM_START, replace the missing or corrupted drivers. At the Recovery Console prompt, type copy driver_source_path:driver_destination_path, and then press ENTER. For example:
copy cd-rom:\i386\vga.sy_ c:\winnt\system32
Files are automatically expanded when the system copies them.
- To quit the Recovery Console, type exit, and then press ENTER.
