SBS: Information About Using SQL Server as a Backend Database for a Web Site (297283)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Small Business Server 2000
  • Microsoft BackOffice Small Business Server 4.5

This article was previously published under Q297283

SUMMARY

The following versions of Microsoft Internet Information Server (IIS) and Microsoft SQL Server are included with Microsoft Small Business Server (SBS):
  • SBS 4.5: IIS 4.0, SQL 7.0
  • SBS 2000: IIS 5.0, SQL 2000
Some companies may choose to host a company Web site that may include access to data that is stored in the SQL Server database that is included with SBS. Because of SBS licensing restrictions, you cannot do this without taking certain additional steps, which are described in this article.

MORE INFORMATION

SQL Server 7.0

In SQL Server 7.0, there is a special SQL Internet Connector license which you can purchase for the server. By purchasing this licensing, you receive unlimited Internet access to the SQL Server through an integrated Web site that uses SQL as the backend database.

Internet Connector

The Internet Connector is a license that provides an unlimited number of devices that Internet users use to access the SQL Server by going through your Web site. An "Internet user" is any person that is currently connected to the Internet, other than a person that is employed by you (as an employee, independent contractor, or in any other capacity), or someone that is otherwise providing goods or services to you, or on your behalf. You must purchase an Internet Connector License for each processor on each server that is running SQL Server or SQL Server Enterprise Edition.

Note: Intranet and extranet applications require Certificate Authority Licenses (CALs).

SQL Server 2000

SQL Server 2000 uses a different licensing model than the one that was used with earlier versions of SQL Server. SQL 2000 can be licensed in a per-processor licensing model. This option, however, is not available with SBS 2000. To license SQL Server 2000 to be used as a backend database server for your Internet Web site, you may need to purchase SQL Server 2000 Standard Edition in the per-processor licensing model.
