Error Message: The Dynamic Link Library Wmsui32.dll Could Not Be Found in the Specified Path (297171)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft BackOffice Small Business Server 4.5

This article was previously published under Q297171

SYMPTOMS

In Control Panel, if you use the Add/Remove Programs tool to remove Windows Messaging, and then you restart BackOffice Small Business Server, you may receive the following error message:
The dynamic link library Wmsui32.dll could not be found in the specified path:
C:\Exchsrvr\Bin; C:\Winnt.sbs\System32; C:\Winnt.sbs\System; C:\Winnt.sbs; C:\Winnt.sbs\System32; C:\Winnt.sbs; C:\Mssql7\Binn; C:\Program Files\Mts
You may also receive this error message when you attempt to start Microsoft Exchange Administrator.

NOTE: This example assumes that you have installed Exchange in the C:\Exchsrvr folder and that you have installed BackOffice Small Business Server in the C:\Winnt.sbs folder.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur because the Wmsui32.dll file is removed as part of the uninstall process, but the reference to the file in the registry is not removed. This file is required for both the Microsoft Exchange 4.0 client and for the Microsoft Exchange Administrator program.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, reapply Exchange Server Service Pack 2 (SP2) or later, and the file should be restored.

MORE INFORMATION

The Exchange group on the Start menu may be removed when you install or remove the Exchange 4.0 client, but this group is re-created when you reapply the Exchange Server Service Pack.
